Dear Ones,

The book ILLUMINATIONS is part of the 100 Flower series. This book, suitable for advanced beginners and up - all ages. THIS is THE book endorsed and praised by the A.F.H.

I invite everyone to make it part of their own oboe music library!

It is comprised of 23 short solo works which are sonic portraits depicting flowers.

The shortest of all melodies are the VIOLETS. Each of them are a row of 12 tones and I took great care with each of these and deserve insight and in depth sensitivity.
Creative Process:
INSIGHT into my philosophy. I feel each individual flower is a planet - universe - unto itself. Every flower, just like every life, MATTERS. They are fragile/strong, fleeting, exquisite, full of nuance and detail. Each and every flower - like each and every human being IS A MASTERPIECE to be revered, nurtured and cherished.
Each individual flower/person/life is an expression of eternal love made manifest. It is a VITAL drop in the ocean of creation of which we are all one.

I wrote PAGES and PAGES of 12 tone rows, carefully contemplating the perfect order to express the color and gist of a little violet flower as I feel it in my psyche.

Then I carefully and patiently determined the perfect rhythm to give these tones the floral and emotional fragrance of their gist.

SENTIMENTS:
I take great pride in these itty bitty sonic portraits. To me, they are mansions of expression and craft.
To me, they are a symbol of every individual child and person. A child might be thought of as small - but they are mighty and significant. They each have a place, a purpose a mysticism all their own in the garden of life.

Consider the pinky finger of a new born baby - or eyelash - like that. Breathtaking, miraculous and precious. An astounding fete of DNA - a creation of cosmic splendor.

OK, so that’s where my consciousness was/is with all of that.

Personal relationship:
In 2017 and 2018 when I was grieving the death of my father, I found significant helpful solace and music therapy in playing the oboe. I found myself returning to ILLUMINATIONS - where the sonic portrait of small flowers that aren’t requiring highest levels of technical mastery as great comfort.

What a great joy it is in playing these little flowers with all of ones technical elegance and heart. In doing so the flowers - and the oboist - BLOOM.
