Coaching

“Meeting Kathryn, or (K.J.) started with finding her advertisement in the Mountain Express around twenty years ago. At that time, I was very close to letting the oboe be a childhood past, but her advertisement changed everything. Since that time KJ has coached me out of my rusty skills to playing in multiple orchestras and concert bands to even being her student representative in France for her international Master Class. Currently K.J . and I enjoy SKYPE lessons and do not let distance since my move to Atlanta be a barrier to continuing our relationship.

It is hard to describe the intuitive nature in which KJ instructs. She has a way of meeting the student on any level to bring out skills, growth and development. I would say from beginner just starting out, to an experienced player, looking to take playing to a higher level, K.J. has a way of coaching to focus on areas that form a confident and balanced player. There is a certain sensitivity to her teaching that goes beyond basic skills and mastering a curriculum. Her coaching takes the student beyond the written note and fingering to allow a student to progress emotionally with music as well.

Through our time together I continue to be amazed at her creativity, musicality and accomplishments. It is an honor to be a student and I can’t wait to see what more the future will bring.“ Cheryl Tuttle Estes, 2022
